Operation Readaloud

Operation Readaloud was created by Lisa von Drasek (formerly of Bank Street and now directing the Kerlan Collection) in response to the need to aggregate children's book creators read-alouds while children are sequestered at home. Submissions from all authors and illustrators are more than welcome! There are millions of Canadian kids out there who had their school years cut short by the pandemic, and countless more who don't have access to the generous resources our school systems and libraries provide. Spread the word, my friends! You never know how far a virtual read-along can go!

DK Canada's "Stay Home, Stay Curious" Campaign

DK Canada is thrilled to share their "Stay Home, Stay Curious" campaign on DK Canada's website.

This hub will house content from across DK Canada's books and divisions. Everything from home learning ideas, recipe extracts to great Canadian content such as a free downloadable teacher's guide for Our Great Prime Ministers. There's also DIY ideas & Gardening tips as well as excerpts to make staying fit at home easy!

Blue Spruce Awards Go Virtual!

The Blue Spruce Awards are going virtual! Visit Forest of Reading (see attachment for the link ; read-aloud schedule) to catch this years Blue Spruce Nominees!  These books will enrich young readers learning experiences with beautiful illustrations blended with fun, interesting, and exciting stories.

Paper Bag Princess Turns 40: A Podcast Primer

A classic of children's literature will be celebrating a big birthday in May 2020; its 40th, to be precise. And what a celebration it will be! Robert Munsch's seminal story, The Paper Bag Princess, has been adored by millions of children around the globe, and inspired countless artists over the last forty years to challenge the framework of 'normal' fairy-tales. The CBC recently published an illuminating interview (which you can check out here) on Munsch's creative process and various inspirations for PBP, along with the exclamation that Elizabeth's proud declaration of independence is indeed a happy ending; Munsch adds, "That's the ending it's supposed to have."

Curiosity Day - September 14th!

Curiosity Day is approaching, my friends! The smiling legend that is Curious George, published for decades by the renowned Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, will be celebrated nationwide on September 14th, 2019. Booksellers, please consult the handy-dandy poster for any information you might need, and if there's anything you need to know that isn't on there, please email Michelle & Ellen over at Raincoast with your requests!

Three Cheers for Kid McGear!

Anyone remember Mighty Machines?  Kid McGear, the hardworking brainchild of Sherri Duskey Rinker and AG Ford, is the newest truck to join the Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site crew, an incredibly popular children's title from Chronicle Books. Can the new Kid on the site prove she's big enough? 

Three Cheers For Kid McGear will be released on September 24th. In the meantime, Chronicle has put together a fun character reveal video done by illustrator AG Ford, which you can watch here, and a dedicated landing page which you can view here.

The first Loan Star Jr. list!

BookNet Canada has finally announced their Loan Stars list for Juvenile and Young Adult titles, the Loan Stars Jr. list!

#NotYourPrincess

#NotYourPrincess, edited by Lisa Charleyboy and Mary Beth Leatherdale, hit bookstores last fall. A collection of poems, essays, interviews, and artwork submitted by Native American women, #NotYourPrincess is a visual anthology that challenges stereotypes and celebrates the diverse voices of the many women who shared their stories.

Teaching Books is now sharing #NotYourPrincess audio resources with over 33,000 schools! Reading Without Walls

Books have tremendous power in expanding our horizons. So many of us have unique stories, and so many of these stories are told through books! In the spirit of expanding these horizons, National Ambassador for Young People's Literature, Gene Luen Yang has announced the Reading Without Walls Challenge encouraging readers to explore books of diverse voices, genres, and platforms. If you're a teacher, encourage your students! If you're a bookseller, encourage your customers! If you're a lover of books, take the challenge - and read beyond your comfort zone! 

Imagine Peace

September 21^st is the International Day of Peace – and what anthem celebrates peace more than John Lennon’s “Imagine”? With the help of illustrator Jean Jullien, Lennon’s words have been translated into a beautiful picture book, published in partnership with Amnesty International. Celebrate the International Day of Peace with these fantastic “Imagine Day” activity kits, available here.

TD Canadian Children's Book Week 2014

Applications are now open for the 2014 TD Canadian Children's Book Week! This year, the theme is Read to Remember, and will commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War I. In May, 29 authors, illustrators and storytellers will tour the country. If you are a school, library, bookstore or community centre that would like to host, click here to apply. Tours include amazing interactive readings, writing workshops and contests for children from Kindergarten to Grade 12. This program has such an amazing outreach to aspiring readers and writers. Last year, over 400 readings were given, connecting with more than 25,000 children nation wide. How amazing is that? Book Week runs from May 3-May 10th, 2014. As I mentioned in a previous post, many fantastic authors, illustrators and storytellers are participating. Click here to see a list of tour participants and locations. Don't wait though...the application deadline is December 31, 2013!

An inside look at STAINED by Cheryl Rainfield

Cheryl Rainfield writes the books she needed as a teen and couldn't find. In Stained, her fourth YA novel, Sarah, who has a port wine stain and some body image issues, is abducted and must find a way to rescue herself. Like Sarah, Cheryl had to rely on her own strength to survive many threatening situations. Earlier this fall, Cheryl spoke to a group of teenagers at Indigo Yorkdale. Cheryl spoke very passionately and strongly, and her personal story and reading were remarkably powerful. A self-defence seminar/demonstration was also part of this event.

Stained recently received a four-star review in CM Magazine. Cheryl is scheduled to make an appearance at OLA Super Conference at the Thomas Allen & Son booth. Follow Thomas Allen & Son on Twitter for more information.

PW has announced it's best of 2012 for Picture Books, Kids + YA Fiction, and Kid's Non-Fiction. They have also posted their Top 10 Books of 2012 for adults. Nice to see lots of Dewey picks on here!

Dundurn has an amazing array of teacher's guides available online.They cover most of their teen fiction as well as a number of their great Canadian non-fiction. To see the complete list go here. They are free of charge even though it doesn't seem that way on the websites.
