The Booksellers Association: Leading the Climate Change Battle

On July 23rd, the Booksellers Association published an extensive Manifesto concerning the state of the environmental impact within the Book Industry. This Manifesto represents "part of [the BA's] ongoing commitment to reducing waste across its membership and throughout the supply chain". Extensive details on both their ideas to reduce waste and studies that include thousands of participants; details too innumerable to fit in this teensy little blog post!

#MOVETHEDATE - Earth's Overshoot Day

The good folks over at New Society Publishers are doing their part to raise awareness about climate change, and our relationship with the environment. Ecological Footprint, written by Mathis Wackernagel and Bert Beyers. Earth's Overshoot Day, according to a quote on New Society's website, "marks the date when humanity’s annual demand on nature exceeds what Earth’s ecosystems can regenerate in that year." In 2019, Earth's Overshoot Day was July 29th - the earliest ever. It's a natural reaction to feel individually dwarfed by the global crisis of climate change, but there are ways to help! Every little thing you do matters. You Are Stardust by Elin Kelsey

After listening to Elin Kelsey's interview on CBC Radio, I am even more in love with this book! You Are Stardust encourages young readers to make the connection between themselves and the world around them. According to Kelsey, children of today learn about the environment in a doom and gloom way. By reminding young readers that they are nature, this book reads like a celebration of being by recognizing the incredible overlaps found between species.

Franklin is 25!

It's hard to believe that Franklin is celebrating 25 years! to commemorate this, Kids Can Press has just release a 25th Anniversary Edition of Franklin in the Dark. Not only does this edition include the original story (which was found in the slushpile) but is jammed packed with all kinds of goodies such as a letter from Paulette and Brenda, samples of the original art work, a look at Franklin around the world and lots more. Happy Earth Day, or Should That Be Eaarth Day?

Eaarth: Making a Life On A Tough New Planet by longtime environmentalist Bill McKibben should be essential reading for every citizen. The first half will completely depress you as the author outlines all the irreversible damage we've done to this planet, mostly over the last fifty years. We have so changed the chemical and physical composition that it even needs a new name, hence "Eaarth" (if you drag it out long enough I think it sounds like a cry for help). The second part suggests what we need to do, not only to slow down the process of global warming but to adapt to the changes which have already happened and are here to stay. There's a very good interview with McKibben at The Walrus website. You can read it here. He also talks about the organization he helped found - 350.org - so called because scientists estimate that 350 parts per million CO2 in the atmosphere is a safe level for humans (we're currently around 390 parts and it's increasing). Check out their excellent website and get a copy of Eaarth either for yourself or to press especially into the hands of teens and students. We're relying on them!
