2010 Governor Generals' Awards Announced. . .


Congratulations to Dianne Warren, winner of the fiction prize for her novel Cool Water, and Allen Casey, winner of the non-fiction prize for Lakeland: Journeys into the Soul of Canada.  Full list of all the GG winners is located here.

I found it interesting that Warren cites Sinclair Ross and W.O. Michell as influences for her novel -- but clarified it by saying she wanted to also set it in the present time. As a Westerner, I think she succeeded quite well.

Sinclair Ross is one of my favourite Canadian writers so I'll definitely get around to reading Cool Water. I'm most intrigued at the moment by the French winner - Kim Thuy's Ru - I read French rather slowly, but I picked up a copy of this a few months ago (gorgeously designed) and am putting it near the top of the pile. We'll be publishing the English translation in 2012 (Yes, I know it's a long time to wait. . . )

I struggle with French, so I am happy to wait. And equally happy that you are doing a translation (who is the translator?).

Not sure yet who the translator is.
